Filling
- 1 cup mascarpone cheese (room temperature)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon espresso or strong coffee (cooled)
- 1/2 teaspoon cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup ladyfinger crumbs (or graham crackers)
Coating and Garnish
- 8 oz semi-sweet or dark chocolate (for coating)
- 2 oz white chocolate (optional drizzle)
- Mini chocolate chips (optional garnish)
- Extra cocoa powder (for dusting)
- Prepare the filling: In a bowl, combine the mascarpone cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, cooled espresso, and cocoa powder. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and completely blended.
- Add ladyfinger crumbs: Stir the ladyfinger crumbs into the mascarpone mixture until the mixture thickens and holds together well. Then cover and refrigerate for 1 hour to firm up.
- Form truffles: After chilling, scoop the mixture using a teaspoon or small cookie scoop and roll into 1-inch balls. Place the truffles onto a parchment-lined baking tray.
- Freeze truffles: Freeze the shaped truffles for 15 to 20 minutes to help them firm up for dipping.
- Melt the chocolate: Using a double boiler or microwave in short bursts, melt the semi-sweet or dark chocolate until smooth.
- Coat truffles: Dip each chilled truffle into the melted chocolate, tapping off any excess chocolate. Place the coated truffles back onto the parchment-lined tray.
- Optional decoration: If desired, drizzle melted white chocolate over the coated truffles and sprinkle mini chocolate chips on top for garnish.
- Final dusting and chill: Lightly dust the truffles with cocoa powder before the chocolate coating sets completely. Chill the truffles until firm before serving.
Notes
- For best results, ensure mascarpone is at room temperature before mixing to avoid lumps.
- Strong espresso or coffee enhances the classic tiramisu flavor; instant espresso powder can be used if preferred.
- Ladyfinger crumbs can be substituted with crushed graham crackers if unavailable.
- Use a fork or dipping tool to coat truffles evenly and prevent melting from warm hands.
- Store truffles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
