Ingredients

Scale

For the Filling:

  • 1 lb ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Assembly:

  • 1 egg, for egg wash
  • 1 tbsp water
  • Marinara sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. Prep the Filling: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, green bell pepper, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Sauté the vegetables until caramelized, about 8 to 10 minutes, then set aside.
  2. Cook the Steak: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and increase the heat to high. Add the thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin steak and sear for 2 to 3 minutes until browned but still juicy. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Remove from heat.
  3. Roll Out the Dough: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). On a floured surface, stretch or roll out your pizza or bread dough into a 12 by 16-inch rectangle, ensuring an even thickness.
  4. Layer the Goodness: Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan evenly over the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border around the edges free of cheese. Evenly distribute the cooked steak slices and caramelized vegetable mixture over the cheese layer.
  5. Roll It Up: Starting from the long side of the dough, carefully but tightly roll the dough into a log shape. Pinch the edges well to seal the seam and ends, preventing any filling from leaking during baking.
  6. Bake to Perfection: Place the rolled stromboli seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Whisk together the egg and water to make an egg wash, then brush it evenly over the surface of the dough. Cut 3 to 4 slits on top to allow steam to escape while baking. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Rest & Slice: Remove the stromboli from the oven and allow it to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • You can substitute ribeye with sirloin or any other tender steak for a more budget-friendly option.
  • If you prefer a spicier stromboli, increase the amount of red pepper flakes or add a dash of hot sauce to the filling.
  • Allowing the stromboli to rest before slicing helps keep the cheese from oozing out too much.
  • Serve with ranch or garlic aioli dips for extra flavor options.
  • Leftover stromboli can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven to maintain the crust’s crispness.
