For the Bread:
- 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 cup)
- ⅓ cup plain yogurt or sour cream
For the Cream Cheese Filling:
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Cinnamon Swirl:
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan, or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- Prepare Cream Cheese Filling: In a medium bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese, sugar, egg, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Set aside.
- Prepare Cinnamon Swirl Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon thoroughly. Set aside for later layering.
- Prepare Banana Bread Batter: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract, mashed bananas, and yogurt or sour cream until well combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, stirring gently until just combined; avoid overmixing.
- Assemble the Bread: Pour half of the banana bread batter into the prepared loaf pan, smoothing it evenly. Spread the cream cheese filling evenly over this layer. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon sugar mixture over the cream cheese layer. Pour the remaining banana bread batter on top, then sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the batter.
- Swirl: Using a knife or skewer, gently swirl through the layers in the pan to create a marbled effect, blending the cream cheese and cinnamon sugar with the banana bread batter without overmixing.
- Bake: Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs attached.
- Cool: Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then carefully remove it and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely to room temperature before slicing.
- Serve: Slice the cooled bread and serve. This decadent banana bread is lovely on its own or paired with a cup of coffee or tea. Enjoy!
Notes
- Make sure bananas are very ripe for the best sweetness and flavor.
- You can substitute yogurt with sour cream or buttermilk as preferred.
- Do not overmix the batter to avoid a dense loaf.
- To store, wrap the bread tightly and keep at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
- Leftover banana bread can be frozen wrapped well for up to 2 months.
- Ensure cream cheese is softened to avoid lumps in the filling.
