Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 40 saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)

Caramel Layer

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Chocolate & Toppings

  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • Sprinkles: Red, green, and white for a festive touch
  • Sea salt for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper or aluminum foil to ensure easy removal of the finished treat.
  2. Prepare the Crackers: Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer in the bottom of the baking dish, ensuring they cover the entire bottom surface without gaps.
  3. Make the Caramel: In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the packed brown sugar and stir continuously until the mixture begins to boil. Allow it to boil undisturbed for 3–4 minutes to thicken properly. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract if using.
  4. Pour the Caramel Over Crackers: Carefully pour the hot caramel mixture evenly over the arranged crackers, spreading with a spatula or spoon to fully coat each cracker.
  5. Bake the Caramel-Cracker Layer: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 5–7 minutes until the caramel is bubbling and set. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  6. Add the Chocolate: Remove the dish from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semisweet chocolate chips evenly over the caramel layer. Let the chocolate sit for a few minutes to melt completely, then smooth it out with a spatula for an even coating.
  7. Decorate: While the chocolate is still warm and melted, sprinkle the top with festive red, green, and white sprinkles as well as optional sea salt for added flavor contrast.
  8. Cool and Set: Allow the dish to cool to room temperature to let the chocolate firm up slightly, then refrigerate for about an hour or until the chocolate is fully hardened and set.
  9. Break Into Pieces: Once fully set, lift the treat out of the baking dish using the parchment paper or foil. Break into bite-sized pieces and serve or package for gifting.

Notes

  • For even easier removal, chill the crackers briefly before pouring the caramel.
  • Use parchment paper instead of foil if you want to avoid any metallic taste.
  • Sprinkling sea salt over the melted chocolate enhances the sweet and salty flavor balance.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
  • To vary the recipe, try using different types of chocolate like milk or white chocolate chips.
