Ingredients

Scale

Pasta

  • 12 Ounces elbow macaroni

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1 white onion (diced)
  • 3 Cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 Pound ground beef
  • 1 green bell pepper (diced)

Tomato Sauce

  • 14 Ounces diced tomatoes (canned, fire-roasted)
  • 15 Ounces tomato sauce (canned)
  • 6 Ounces tomato paste
  • 1 Tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 Teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 Teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 Teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Teaspoon granulated sugar (optional)

Garnish

  • 2 Tablespoons fresh parsley (chopped)

Instructions

  1. Boil the pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the elbow macaroni according to the package directions until al dente. Drain thoroughly and set aside.
  2. Sauté onions and butter: In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add diced white onion and sauté, stirring frequently, for 4 to 5 minutes until softened and translucent.
  3. Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
  4. Cook ground beef: Add the ground beef to the pot. Break it apart with a spoon and cook for 7 to 10 minutes until fully browned and no longer pink.
  5. Sauté green pepper: Add the diced green bell pepper and continue to sauté for 2 to 3 minutes to soften slightly.
  6. Add tomato components and seasoning: Stir in the diced fire-roasted tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, kosher salt, ground black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and granulated sugar if using. Mix well to combine all ingredients evenly.
  7. Combine pasta and sauce: Add the cooked pasta to the pot with the sauce mixture. Stir well to blend everything together and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the dish to heat thoroughly.
  8. Serve: Garnish the American Chop Suey with freshly chopped parsley and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian variation, substitute ground beef with plant-based ground meat or cooked lentils.
  • The granulated sugar is optional and helps cut the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • Feel free to add crushed red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
  • Leftovers keep well refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheat easily on the stovetop or microwave.
